Digital Trends’ Mortal Kombat X Review is a Smash

It's brutal and wildly's just not for the faint of heart.

It’s brutal and wildly entertaining…it’s just not for the faint of heart.

Mortal Kombat X is brutal. But in fact, as anybody who has played it will tell you, it’s more than brutal. It’s an ultra-visceral gore-filled shockfest designed specifically to elicit a response. That response will change drastically depending on who’s ingesting the material; if it’s a gamer who understands that a lot of this just fantastical tongue-in-cheek nastiness, the response will be positive. If it’s Jack Thompson, his head will explode.

The game has already received widespread critical acclaim and right now, our favorite review can be found at Digital Trends. Critic Sam Prell delivers an engaging review that appropriately mirrors the outlandish insanity on display in MKX. There’s a solid balance of comparison to the previous entry (the 2011 reboot) and the objective/subjective mix we always look for. There’s also a clear understanding of the goal(s) of the developers, which makes for an informed read.

It’s not for everyone but it’s certainly worth seeing. And when a game like this comes along, the reviewer should strive to produce an equally entertaining breakdown. That’s what we get here, and we also appreciate the pacing and general quality.

Congrats, Sam!

Do you have the guts to face down your opponent? Or will you LOSE your guts?

Do you have the guts to face down your opponent? Or will you LOSE your guts?

Why We Like It:

— The critic captures the spirit of the game right off the bat. You should never start with details and beginning with series lore is getting boring. It’s better to bring a little flair to the first paragraph, which we see here.

— Rather than a tedious overview, we get an entertaining mix of overarching details and specific examples. Not only does it prove the critic played enough of the product, but it shows the requisite enthusiasm.

Properly paced and relatively well-written. There are too many game critics who need lessons in both, so we appreciate this sort of quality.

Yep, great review. 🙂

I like the review but for some reason, this game just isn’t doing it for me. I don’t feel as drawn in as I wanted to be, I guess.

I’m sorry but this game is RIDICULOUS. LOL
