Okay, Xbox Got Tomb Raider; What Can PlayStation Go Get?

It's a timed exclusive on Xbox platforms; what could PlayStation grab as a timed exclusive?

It’s a timed exclusive on Xbox platforms; what could PlayStation grab as a timed exclusive?

Sony has made it plain several times over: They don’t feel the need to purchase timed exclusives. There’s something to that statement, as PlayStation’s stable of first-party development teams is quite impressive. But what if Sony wanted to take a cue from Microsoft?

This industry is all about competition, yes? When one competitor makes a bold move, such as Microsoft’s purchase of timed exclusivity for Rise of the Tomb Raider, Sony should respond. That’s just the name of the game (pun intended). Ghandi said “an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind” but really, we’re not talking about revenge, here. We’re talking about keeping up, right?

So, that being the case, which major third-party franchise could PlayStation snag for themselves, if only temporarily? It’ll probably never happen but there are several interesting suspects out there. Even if Sony really couldn’t afford to purchase even timed exclusive rights to any of them, it’s very interesting to consider. Can you imagine if Sony made a similar announcement at the Tokyo Game Show next month? Tit for tat.

Can you imagine if Red Dead Redemption 2 was announced as a timed exclusive for PS4?!

It would have to be comparable to Tomb Raider in terms of popularity. Perhaps timed exclusivity for the 2015 Assassin’s Creed, as Sony’s relationship with Ubisoft has always been solid. Don’t forget that this franchise has received plenty of PlayStation-exclusive content over the years, and the recently announced PS4 exclusive, Wild, is a project led by Ubisoft boss Michel Ancel. Still, considering the potential sales of any new AC installment, it’s hard to believe Sony has the necessary scratch.

What about one of BioWare’s upcoming projects? Wouldn’t it ironic if Sony secured temporary rights to the new Mass Effect, after the franchise was originally exclusive to Xbox? Considering the team in question, though, this probably won’t happen. Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive have always had a great relationship with Sony, dating back to the days when GTA ruled on the PlayStation platform. The Red Dead sequel a timed exclusive for PS4…? That would rock the world but again, we’re talking mucho dinero.

Any bright ideas out there? Like we said, Sony very likely won’t make any such move, but it’s always worth discussing. The size and massively explosive nature of that bombshell would reverberate for months…

As you say, it probably wouldn’t be possible to grab GTA as a timed exclusive, to help recreate the good ol’ PS2 days.

Still, that would be the bombshell to end all bombshells. 😉

Assassin’s Creed might actually be doable. Ubisoft and Sony really do seem to have quite the solid relationship, but I doubt Ubisoft would go for a year of exclusivity…maybe a month.

Call of Duty!

Okay, no, j/k. 😉

LOL

Don’t even want it.

It’d be the funniest thing in the world if PlayStation got GTA back as a timed exclusive. I’d laugh my ass off and I wouldn’t be the only one. LMAO
