How to pair a replacement Fire TV remote without the old remote
To pair a replacement Fire TV remote without the old remote, first confirm that the replacement supports your exact Fire TV model. Then try its Home-button pairing procedure. If the Fire TV is already online, the official Fire TV phone app can give you the on-screen controls needed to add it. A factory reset is not the starting point.
Check compatibility before repeating the pairing process
A remote that looks identical is not necessarily interchangeable. Find the Fire TV model on its packaging, order history, or About screen, then compare it with the replacement remote's compatibility list. Distinguish a streaming stick from a television with Fire TV built in. Some replacements are infrared television remotes rather than the Bluetooth navigation remote your device needs.
Fit fresh batteries in the indicated orientation and keep the replacement near the Fire TV. If another Fire TV is nearby, make sure you are watching the intended device's HDMI input. A power button that turns the television on does not prove that navigation has paired successfully: television controls and Fire TV navigation are separate tests.
Route one: pair directly without on-screen control
Amazon's replacement-remote instructions say to restart the Fire TV, wait until it is back on, then hold Home on the new remote for ten seconds. Follow any pairing prompt that appears. This is the useful first route when the original remote is lost and you cannot reach Settings.
- Use the Fire TV's normal power supply and let it finish starting.
- Point your attention at the Fire TV screen, not just the television's power indicator.
- Hold Home on the compatible replacement for ten seconds.
- Test the directional buttons and Select after pairing.
If it fails, do not immediately conclude that the stick is broken. Recheck the model match and batteries. If the replacement was previously paired elsewhere, consult Amazon's reset instructions for that particular remote; reset combinations are not universal. Avoid repeatedly cutting power while the television shows a software update.
Route two: use the official phone app
The app route requires the phone and Fire TV to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Open the official Fire TV app, choose the device, and complete its on-screen pairing prompts. Use the app controls to open Settings, Controllers & Bluetooth Devices, Amazon Fire TV Remotes, then Add New Remote. Hold Home on the replacement if it does not appear, and use the app to select it.
If the app cannot discover the device, use our Fire TV app discovery checklist. A guest network or a Fire TV that has not connected to the current router can make this route unavailable. Downloading a different remote app does not remove that network requirement.
If neither route is available
| What you see | Useful next check |
|---|---|
| Fire TV Home appears; replacement never responds | Exact remote compatibility, batteries, and model-specific reset instructions |
| App finds nothing after a router change | Whether Fire TV is actually connected to the same current network |
| TV power works but navigation does not | Fire TV pairing rather than television equipment-control setup |
| Setup screen appears on a reset device | A compatible physical remote; do not assume the app can reach an offline device |
Before buying another replacement, record both model identifiers and ask Amazon support or the seller to confirm the pairing. This gives you a more useful answer than reporting that a generic “Fire Stick remote” will not connect. If a remote pairs but later drops out, that is a different problem; see the remote disconnection guide rather than resetting the whole device.
