Is IQ a word in Scrabble? IQ versus QI
No: IQ is not a playable word in Merriam-Webster's official Scrabble word finder. QI, with the letters reversed, is playable. Do not confuse an abbreviation being present in an ordinary English dictionary with its acceptance in the word list governing your Scrabble game.
IQ and QI are different plays
| Letter order | Official word-finder result |
|---|---|
| IQ | Not playable |
| QI | Playable; a word associated with vital energy in Chinese thought |
Scrabble reads the word formed on the board, not an anagram you could make from the same tiles. If your placement reads IQ, the fact that those tiles can also spell QI does not validate the placement. Check any crossing words too: a valid main word does not excuse an invalid cross-word.
Which dictionary settles a dispute?
Use the reference agreed before the game. NASPA's tournament word list and the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary are related but distinct references; a general-purpose dictionary is another thing again. If you play an event or app using Collins, select its exact Scrabble lexicon rather than assuming an ordinary Collins English definition settles legality.
The verified lookup here is Merriam-Webster's Scrabble finder. For a tournament, the event's named lexicon and edition remain authoritative. Avoid a generic online anagram site that does not say which dictionary it uses or when its data was updated.
Why the abbreviation argument is not enough
IQ commonly abbreviates intelligence quotient, but explaining what it means does not make it a legal play. Likewise, arguing that some other shortened word is accepted does not establish that this one is. Word validity is an entry-by-entry question under the applicable reference.
For the contrasting case, see whether OK is playable. For the reversed letters, our QI-versus-IQ explanation focuses on the distinction. Neither answer requires unrelated claims about intelligence scores or a long list of unverified two-letter words.
Before placing the tiles, confirm the order, the selected dictionary, and every new cross-word. If those checks do not permit IQ, play QI only where that different order forms a legal move, or choose another play.
