PS5 120Hz not showing: HDMI, game, and display checklist
PS5 120Hz not showing usually means the game, selected mode, HDMI path, or display input does not support the requested combination. Enable 120 Hz Output, launch a game that supports it, and check the active signal while that game is running. A screen advertised as 144Hz or 165Hz does not automatically accept PS5's 120Hz output over HDMI.
Check the game before shopping for a cable
Confirm that the specific PS5 game and version offers a 120Hz or high-frame-rate mode. A display setting cannot add a performance mode the game does not provide. Also check whether you are running the intended console version rather than assuming every edition has the same options.
Look inside the game's graphics or video menu for its requirements. Some modes trade image quality for frame rate; others impose additional conditions. Use the game's own instructions instead of a general list of settings copied from a different title.
Sony's game-preset guide places Performance Mode or Resolution Mode under Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, Game Presets. This preference applies to games that offer the relevant choice. It is not a system-wide conversion of all games to 120 frames per second.
Then check the console's output
- Open Settings, Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Enable 120 Hz Output for supported games and displays.
- Inspect the connected HDMI device information.
- Launch the supported game and select its applicable high-frame-rate mode.
- Check the display's active input information while that mode is running.
A Home-screen reading is not the same test as a supported game actively using its high-refresh mode. Likewise, a capability list describes what the display reports it can accept, while an active-signal readout describes the current output. Keep those two readings separate.
Sony's video-output guide documents 120Hz output and the 1440p output test. If you are aiming for 1440p, run that supported test rather than assuming a display's PC specification settles console compatibility.
Match resolution, refresh rate, and the actual HDMI port

Read the timing table in the display manual. A high refresh rate available only through DisplayPort does not establish the same support over HDMI. Also check whether just one of the TV's HDMI ports supports the desired mode.
ASUS's PS5 1080p/120Hz compatibility guidance is a useful manufacturer example: it lists particular monitors rather than treating all high-refresh screens as equivalent. For another brand, use that manufacturer's model-specific documentation instead of extending the ASUS list by analogy.
Remove the middle devices for one test
Connect PS5 directly to the display, bypassing receivers, capture devices, switches, and splitters. If the requested mode appears, one of those components or its configuration was limiting the path. Add components back one at a time to find which comparison changes the result.
For 4K at 120Hz, Sony recommends the supplied cable or an appropriate Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and the correct display port. That does not mean every lower-resolution test needs a new cable. The decisive requirement is the resolution-and-refresh combination you actually need, not the most expensive label on sale.
Check the TV's instructions for enabling its enhanced HDMI format where required. Keep a note of the prior setting. Do not buy a new display or several cables before checking whether the existing connection is simply using the wrong input.
120Hz, 120fps, and VRR are not synonyms
Refresh rate describes the display signal; frame rate describes frames produced by the game. A 120Hz signal does not prove that gameplay stays at 120fps in every scene. Variable refresh rate is another feature, not a replacement name for high refresh rate.
For troubleshooting, use the game's documented mode and the display's signal readout, not how smooth one menu animation seems. A 120Hz-capable display can still be receiving a 60Hz signal. Equally, establishing a 120Hz signal does not give you a measurement of the game's minimum frame rate.
When the checklist still does not produce 120Hz
Check console and display firmware using their official instructions. For a 4K/120Hz target, Sony's guide also notes that restricted Video Transfer Rate settings can affect available output; keep the documented automatic configuration while testing compatibility. Do not change several picture features at once.
Send support the game and mode, display model, exact HDMI port, cable, intermediate devices, and the active signal result. That collection shows which part of the requested combination is missing. If the display does not accept the required HDMI timing, a menu toggle cannot create that hardware capability.
