Roblox error code 277: why it happens and how to fix it
Roblox error code 277 is a connection error, not a diagnosis of a broken router or a banned account. Roblox's support page associates it with a failed network connection between the application and servers. Start by checking service status and whether other experiences work, then investigate your device and connection one change at a time.
Find the scope of the failure
Record the full message before closing it. Note whether it appears while joining, after playing for a while, or after the device sleeps or changes network. Although players often describe 277 as a mid-session disconnect, do not use that as an absolute rule: the official explanation covers connection establishment problems too.
| Comparison | What it helps isolate |
|---|---|
| Another experience works | The failing experience or its server session |
| Another device works on the same network | The original app/device, while not ruling out every network issue |
| The same device works on another permitted network | The original network path or its restrictions |
| Several users fail during a reported incident | A service issue you cannot repair locally |
These tests narrow possibilities; they do not prove a particular component is defective. On a metered connection, consider data charges before testing. Never move a school or work device onto another network to evade its administrator's rules.
Check Roblox before reinstalling anything
Read the official Roblox status page. If an incident matches the time and affected service, follow its updates and try again after recovery. A green status page is helpful but does not prove every individual experience is healthy. If only one experience fails, check its official announcements or report the issue to its creator.
Close Roblox fully, reopen the official app, and try joining again. Update it through its supported distribution channel. Do not install a modified client, an exploit tool, or a download advertising a special “277 patch.” None is required to use Roblox's normal troubleshooting process.
Test the connection without weakening security
Where possible, compare stable wired connectivity with Wi-Fi, or move closer to the router temporarily. Roblox's general connection guide discusses inconsistent wireless connections and security software that blocks the application. Check the allowed-app rule for the genuine Roblox installation; ask the network owner if you cannot change it.
Do not disable the firewall globally or forward a large range of incoming router ports as a first-line fix. A support page discussing network ports does not mean every home player needs unsolicited traffic exposed to their computer. Likewise, registry-cleaner downloads and arbitrary DNS changes are poor substitutes for establishing which connection is failing.
When an app reinstall is reasonable
If other devices work and the same device repeatedly fails across experiences, follow the official error-277 instructions for your operating system. Those instructions include reinstalling the app and, on relevant platforms, clearing app data. Read the platform-specific steps rather than copying a Windows folder command onto a phone or Mac.
Before removing app data, make sure you know your sign-in method and can complete two-step verification. Never share your password, session cookie, or recovery codes with someone offering to fix the error. Reinstall from the official store or Roblox source, then retest before making another change.
Send support a reproducible report
Include your device model, operating system, Roblox version, the exact error, affected experience, approximate time, and the comparisons you tried. This is more actionable than “my internet is fast.” Do not repeatedly reinstall after every disconnect if the evidence instead points to one server.
If your message actually says 279 or ID 17, use our Roblox error 279 guide. If play continues but motion is sluggish, that is a different symptom covered by our Roblox lag diagnosis.
