PS5 says “LAN cable disconnected” even when it is plugged in
A PS5 “LAN cable disconnected” message means you should first test the Ethernet connection itself: reseat both ends, try a known-working cable, and compare another router LAN port. Do not start by changing DNS or buying faster broadband. A cable can remain visibly plugged in while its connection is intermittent, but the notification alone does not identify the faulty part.
Build a simple comparison before changing settings
Pause downloads and leave an online match before testing. Trace the entire cable route from the PS5 to the router. Note any wall socket, coupler, network switch, or powerline adapter between them. Each extra component creates another place to compare if the direct connection works.
Inspect the accessible plugs without opening equipment. A connector should seat securely without being forced. Do not wedge the plug in place with paper, bend contacts, or apply liquid to a powered port. If the console port appears physically damaged, support is a better next step than improvising a mechanical repair.
A wireless connection working while the cable warning appears gives you a useful comparison, but not a diagnosis of the cable itself. For this fault, the useful question is narrower: does the wired link remain connected under a controlled test?
Use this cable-and-port test order
- Reseat the current cable. Reconnect each end carefully and observe whether the warning returns.
- Keep the router port; change the cable. Use a known-working cable you already have, if available.
- Keep that cable; change the router LAN port. Do not use the router's WAN/internet socket as a substitute.
- Bypass intermediate equipment. Compare a direct router-to-console route where practical.
- Compare another device on the suspect route. This helps determine whether the fault follows the route or only the PS5.
These are isolation tests, not a promise that a cable swap fixes every console. Keep each test long enough to cover the situation in which the warning normally occurs. An intermittent failure that appears every evening may not reveal itself during a few seconds at the Home screen.
What each result tells you—and what it does not
| Result | Reasonable next focus |
|---|---|
| Only the original cable fails | Replace that cable after confirming the comparison |
| Several devices fail on one router port | Investigate the router port or its configuration |
| Direct connection works; wall route fails | Inspect the intermediate route |
| PS5 fails across known-working cables and ports | Console software, port, and PlayStation support |
Do not overstate a result. A laptop working once on the same cable is helpful evidence but does not rule out an intermittent cable fault. Repeated comparable results are stronger. Keep a short record of which combination failed rather than remembering only the latest swap.
Recheck the console's wired setup
On PS5, open Settings, Network, Settings, then Set Up Internet Connection and select the wired LAN setup. Follow Sony's connection instructions. If your network does not require custom values, do not introduce manual addresses, DNS, or proxy settings as speculative fixes.
Restart the PS5 normally and compare again. If other household devices also lose connectivity, investigate the router or provider separately. Sony's NW-102468-1 guidance includes restarting the console and restarting a router after waiting at least five minutes. That page concerns a network error; it is not evidence that every LAN-disconnected notification has the same cause.
Only restart network equipment you own or administer, and warn anyone depending on it first. A managed network's authentication or port configuration should be checked by its administrator rather than bypassed.
Why DNS changes are not the first repair
DNS helps resolve service names after networking is available. It does not reseat an Ethernet plug or establish a broken physical link. If the warning specifically reports a disconnected cable, establish a stable connection before investigating name resolution or a game's matchmaking service.
Similarly, a fast speed-test result does not explain every interruption. It measures a transfer during that test, not whether the cable connection remains stable afterward. Avoid changing unrelated network values just because a forum post lists them alongside a cable complaint.
Update safely, then escalate with evidence
Check the official PS5 system software update route if the fault persists across known-working hardware. The menu is Settings, System, System Software, then System Software Update and Settings; choose Update System Software. Updating and reinstalling are different actions: Sony warns that reinstalling system software deletes console data. Do not select reinstallation as a routine network test.
Report the PS5 model, software version, exact warning, cable and port comparisons, and whether the problem follows rest-mode wake-up or active play. Use Wi-Fi temporarily if it provides a stable connection while the wired fault is investigated. A workaround is useful, but it should not be mistaken for proof that the underlying LAN problem has been repaired.
