Why does PS5 turn on with the TV and how do you disable it?
If your PS5 turns on with the TV, HDMI device control is the first setting to check. On the console, open Settings, System, then HDMI and turn off Enable HDMI Device Link. Test the TV again afterward. This stops the console's HDMI control link, but it also removes conveniences such as linked power behaviour.
Why switching on one device can wake another
HDMI carries more than a picture. Compatible equipment can exchange control commands through HDMI-CEC. A television may send a command when it starts or selects a connected source, and a console or sound system may respond. That can be useful when you want one remote to begin a gaming session, but annoying when you only wanted to watch television.
Samsung's Anynet+ guide describes control of power, standby, and other functions through HDMI-CEC. Samsung calls its implementation Anynet+; other manufacturers use different names. The behaviour depends on the connected devices and settings, not simply on the presence of an HDMI cable.
The console-side fix and its tradeoff
- Save your game and return to the PS5 Home screen.
- Open Settings, then System, then HDMI.
- Turn off Enable HDMI Device Link.
- Put the console into your usual non-playing state using its normal controls.
- Turn the TV off and on, then select its usual input without pressing the controller's PS button.
Use the last step as a controlled test: pressing the controller at the same time would introduce another reason for the PS5 to wake. Repeat the behaviour that originally caused the problem, including selecting the PS5 input if that was the trigger.
The official PlayStation DualSense tutorial identifies System, HDMI as the location for device linking and One-Touch Play. Its tutorial is in German, but it describes the same console feature. Sony also documents HDMI wake behaviour in its energy-efficiency information.
Turning off the master link is a broad change. Expect to use separate controls for actions previously linked through it. It does not lower the game's rendering quality or disconnect the HDMI video signal; device control and video output are different functions.
Do not confuse the direction of the power link
One-Touch Play is useful when you want the console to start the display and bring you to its input. Power Off Link concerns linked shutdown or standby behaviour. Neither label should be read as a universal promise that every television's incoming wake command is controlled independently.
If you want to preserve some conveniences, first establish that disabling the master HDMI Device Link solves the unwanted wake-up. Then consult the descriptions on your console and your TV manual before re-enabling individual behaviours. A setting that controls “PS5 turns on TV” is not necessarily the answer to “TV turns on PS5.”
If your real problem is the display going dark while playing, first distinguish the TV entering standby from the TV staying on but losing its video signal. That symptom needs separate investigation; disabling a power link is not a general repair for every HDMI problem.
When it is better to change the TV instead
If several HDMI devices wake together and you want independent control across the whole setup, inspect the television's HDMI-CEC options. On supported Samsung models, the Anynet+ control appears under Connection and External Device Manager. Older and newer models can use different menu routes, so match the manual to the model.
Be aware of the wider effect. Turning off the television's CEC feature may also remove linked soundbar power or remote-control conveniences. A console-only change is the narrower experiment when the PS5 is the only unwanted device. Write down the original setting so that you can restore it if the tradeoff is worse than the wake-up.
Do not unplug an active console to test power behaviour. Use the normal console power controls, and wait for it to finish shutting down before disconnecting power if you need to rearrange equipment. Rest mode is not the same as a complete shutdown; do not remove power merely because the television looks off.
If PS5 still wakes with device linking disabled
Record exactly what happens: does it wake when the TV powers on, when you choose an input, or at an unrelated time? Keep the controller untouched during the comparison. Also check whether someone is using Remote Play or another authorised remote-control feature. Sony's energy information distinguishes network wake from HDMI wake.
A television's universal-remote setup may have controls separate from its CEC switch, so inspect the registered devices if the TV manual describes that feature. Do not assume a particular brand sends only one kind of power command.
If the trigger remains unclear, provide support with the console and TV models, whether a receiver sits between them, and the result with HDMI Device Link disabled. That is enough to distinguish a linked-control issue from an unexplained wake-up without resetting the console or removing your games.
